South West Climbing Trees Project:

PembertonBy Pemberton | 8/12/2025

Pemberton’s Treasures Reawakening

If you’ve ever day‑dreamt of climbing the famous Gloucester or Bicentennial trees, you’re about to see those dreams come true again.

What’s Happening?

The South West Climbing Trees Project, backed by a $3 million investment from the Western Australian Government’s Outdoor Adventure Tourism package, is underway. It’s all about bringing those iconic trees back to life—safely and sustainably.

Project Highlights:

  • Gloucester Tree: Closed in 2023 due to engineering concerns, the tree is now being restored with a new in‑canopy platform.
  • Bicentennial Tree: Updated and reopened to climbers as of June 2024, with new lookout access returning.

Engineers, arborists, and heritage specialists are collaborating on the designs. Contracts are in place, with reopening of Gloucester Tree expected by late 2025.

Why This Matters to Us

These towering Karri landmarks aren’t just natural wonders—they’re part of our story and identity. Reintroducing climbing access brings adventure tourism and cultural significance front and centre for Pemberton. It’s great for locals and visitors alike, and it complements our efforts to promote environmentally and culturally conscious experiences in the region.
