Alerts & Warnings

Important Alerts and Warnings for Travelling in Pemberton and the Southern Forests

When visiting Pemberton, keeping informed about local conditions and safety guidelines is essential, especially in the warmer months when fire risks increase. Here are some key tips for a safe, enjoyable journey:

Bushfire Alerts and Emergency Information
For bushfire updates, check Emergency WA or tune into ABC Radio on 738 AM. In emergencies, always dial 000.

Trail Conditions and Closures
For access updates to trails and parks, including the Bibbulmun and Munda Biddi trails, check DBCA Alerts or contact the DBCA Pemberton Office at 9776 1207. Be mindful that seasonal closures may apply to popular trails.

Mobile Coverage and Staying Connected
With limited mobile coverage in some areas, Telstra offers the most reliable network. If exploring remote areas, let friends or family know your plans, as recovery services are scarce, making insurance vital for off-road travel.

Local Medical Services and Emergencies
Pemberton is supported by its volunteer-staffed St John Ambulance service, which the community treasures.
All Emergencies are 000

For non-emergencies, you may contact:

  • Pemberton Hospital: 9776 4000
  • Dr Vesely – Pemberton Medical Centre: 9776 1101
  • Pemberton Pharmacy: 9776 1054

Wildlife Awareness
The Southern Forests are home to unique wildlife, including kangaroos, quokkas, and bandicoots. When driving at dawn, dusk, or night, be extra cautious to avoid animal collisions. Respect all wildlife, maintain safe distances, and avoid feeding animals to preserve their natural habits. If you find an injured animal, please ensure your safety and that of your travelling companions prior to attempting to assist it.

The following numbers may assist you:

  • Donnelly (Pemberton) DBCA office: 0437 692 518
  • Wildcare Helpline (injured wildlife): 9474 9055
  • Seabird Rescue: 0428 862 852 / 0447 877 149
  • Manjimup Veterinary Clinic: 08 9771 2060

Swimming and Water Safety
The Pemberton Swimming Pool and nearby water bodies offer refreshing escapes, but always swim with caution. Be aware of strong currents in natural pools, rivers, and along our south coast ocean and supervise children at all times.

Our waters are stained brown with tannin, this is usually caused through soaking from our Eucalypt and coffee rock aquifers. Just think of it like a big tea bag – nothing to worry about however difficult to see what is under the surface.

Safety Tips
Pack a first aid kit, adequate water, and check weather updates before setting out. Dress appropriately for changing conditions and ensure you’re prepared for diverse terrain.
