A nature‑infused adventure itinerary for active couples and families (2 days / 1 night)

Getting here (self‑drive): From Perth, allow 3.5 to 4 hours (approx. 327–335 km) on a scenic south‑west drive, perfect for podcasts and snack stops before you hit the karri forests.

Day 1 – Arrive, Ride & Unwind among the Karris

12:45 – 1:30 pm, Lunch in town
Roll into Pemberton for an easy local bite at Jarrah & Jade Lunch Bar—great for families arriving between standard meal times, with hearty Reubens, salads and fresh, flavour‑packed options. (They’ve been bridging the “late‑lunch” gap and are centrally located.)

2:00 – 3:15 pm, Historic Pemberton Tramway to the Cascades (75 minutes)
Board the Cascades service for an engaging forest journey through the region’s timber and rail heritage, easy, seated, and fun for kids. The 75‑minute tour operates multiple days per week and is dog‑friendly (leashed; conditions apply). Book ahead in peak periods.

3:30 – 4:45 pm, Pemberton Pool and Mountain Bike Park
Walk or drive a few minutes to Pemberton Pool, a historic, forest‑lined swimming hole on Lefroy Brook, right next to the Pemberton Mountain Bike Park trailhead, perfect for a post‑tram dip and a spin on the kids’ skills loop and pump track. Toilets, BBQs and picnic space make this a low‑effort, high‑reward stop for families.

5:00 pm, Check‑in: Serenity House (family base with wellness option)
Settle into Serenity House, tucked just off the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail—a convenient, tranquil base designed for families or small groups. Hosts can share local tips, and on‑site wellness treatments are available by arrangement (a welcome reset for parents).

5:45 – 6:45 pm, Sunset share plates at Treehouse Tapas and Wine Bar
Stroll to Treehouse Tapas and Wine Bar for region‑driven small plates and a long list of local wines in a cosy, family‑friendly setting. Check current opening days/hours before you go (open Friday – Sunday currently).

7:00 – 8:30 pm, Dinner and a (grown‑ups’) dram at Jaspers
Round out the evening at Jaspers Pemberton, known for its seasonal menu and one of the widest whisky & bourbon selections in WA’s South West, with chocolate pairings for dessert. It’s centrally located and popular, so reservations are recommended.

Day 2 – Choose Your Adventure, then sweet treats and a swim

8:00 – 9:00 am, Breakfast at Wild at Heart (Rocco’s Diner)
Fuel up with a quality family breakfast at Wild at Heart (rebranding to Rocco’s Diner), a local favourite known for fresh, seasonal plates and deli items. It’s right on Brockman Street and handy to everything else on today’s agenda.

Option A (9:00 am – 1:00 pm): Beach and Forest Eco Adventure (4WD tour)

Join Pemberton Discovery Tours for their signature half‑day eco adventure, a family‑friendly way to reach the mobile, land‑locked Yeagarup Dunes, forest tracks and coastal viewpoints without needing your own 4WD. Guides tailor commentary to the season (think wildflowers, birdlife and hidden forest nooks).

Option B (9:30 am – 12:00 pm): Aerial Adventure Pemberton (zipline and high‑ropes)

Prefer to stay close to town? Head five minutes to Aerial Adventure Pemberton, a high‑ropes and zipline course in Gloucester National Park beside the Gloucester Tree. Courses scale in height and challenge, making it a hit for children (from approx. 4–5+ years; see site for ratios) and adults alike; advance bookings recommended. (Note: the Gloucester Tree remains closed to climbing during upgrades, with the Bicentennial Tree open to its first platform, you can still visit both sites for trails and picnics.)

12:30 – 1:15 pm, Chocolate stop (parents’ coffee included)
On your way out of the national park, make a sweet detour to the Southern Forests Chocolate Company (about 10 minutes from town). This small artisan maker serves hand‑crafted truffles, hot chocolates and coffee seven days (typically 9:00 am–4:00 pm), easy parking, relaxed vibe and a surefire family pleaser.

1:30 – 3:00 pm, Big Brook Dam: swim, stroll, bird‑spot
Cap the trip at Big Brook Dam, one of Pemberton’s most popular and family‑friendly recreation sites. Enjoy the sandy swimming beach, picnic shelters and the sealed 4‑km loop trail, stroller and wheelchair‑accessible, with bird hides and forest views all the way. (Dogs permitted on‑lead, but not on the beach.)

3:15 pm, Depart for Perth
Aim to be on the road by mid‑afternoon for a relaxed 3.5–4‑hour return drive, making sure to meander through the back roads to pick up local produce at farm gates, keeping those forest memories fresh as the city lights appear.

Optional add‑ons (subject to time & interest)

  • Bicentennial Tree (viewpoint/picnic; partial climbing access only) in Warren National Park, a dramatic sense of scale for kids without committing to a long walk.
  • Winery lunch the next trip: the Pemberton Wine Region excels with cool‑climate varietals (notably pinot noir), pairing well with family‑friendly menus. Wineries open for lunch or tastings; Silkwood Estate, Mountfords Wine and Cidery, Pemberley of Pemberton, Ampersand Estate and Hidden River Estate.
