Fire Safety and the Karri Forest Environment

PembertonBy Pemberton | 2/1/2025

Staying Aware during our Summer period.

The towering karri forests of Pemberton are a breathtaking part of our landscape, shaped by time, nature, and even fire. Fire plays a natural role in the Australian bush, helping certain plants regenerate and maintain healthy ecosystems. While it’s a part of life in the Southern Forests, being aware and informed ensures that visitors can safely enjoy their time in the region, especially during the late summer months.

Fire Awareness Without the Fear

Fire in the karri forest is not always an emergency—many burns are carefully planned and managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) to keep the environment healthy and reduce the risk of larger, uncontrolled fires. Bushfire preparedness is a shared responsibility between landowners, local communities, emergency services, and visitors.

When you visit Pemberton and the Southern Forests, knowing your surroundings and being aware of fire conditions can help you travel with confidence.

NOTE – TOTAL FIRE DANGER
But when it cools off its important to Know the Rules

🔥 Campfires can be a major cause of bushfires, so always follow the rules:
✔️ Check if campfires are permitted (usually Easter to early November) before lighting one – fire bans can change daily.
✔️ Always use designated fire pits and keep fires small and manageable.
✔️ Never leave a campfire unattended—a small spark can lead to a big problem.
✔️ Make sure your fire is completely out before bed or before leaving the campsite. Pour water (not just dirt) over the embers to ensure it is cold to the touch.
✔️ Use gas cookers where possible—they are safer and often allowed during fire bans.

A Huge Thank You to Our Firefighting Teams

Our local volunteer firefighters, along with the DBCA fire crews, local emergency services, and community bushfire brigades, work tirelessly to keep our forests, towns, and communities safe.

🔥 Whether it’s a prescribed burn or an emergency response, their dedication protects the region and ensures that visitors and locals alike can enjoy the beauty of the Southern Forests and Valleys.

If you see fire crews in action, give them a wave, and remember that temporary road closures or smoke can be part of the process to keep everyone safe.

🚶‍♂️🚴 Track & Trail Closures 🌲🔥

Due to fire management, maintenance, or seasonal conditions, some tracks and trails may be temporarily closed. Before starting your walk or ride on the Bibbulmun Track or Munda Biddi Trail, it’s important to check for updates on the DBCA website to ensure a safe and uninterrupted journey. Plan ahead and stay informed!
